Match result: Tranmere
We kick off our predictions with a home win tip. Tranmere were a decent outfit last season and judging by their pre-season performances and results they will be again. They've won three of five friendly games with a draw versus Sunderland and narrow loss to Premier League Burnley closing off their warm up phase. Walsall have not enjoyed such a pleasant pre-season. They've managed to win just one match losing the other three they've played. Walsall have been somewhat of a bogey side for Tranmere over the years but that might end now.
Handicap: Tranmere -1, Draw
We've just touched on Walsall being a bogey team and whilst we are backing Tranmere to break their poor run on Saturday it won't be done easily; they've not beaten Walsall since back in 2012 having faced them nine times since that day. Of course, there are elements of emotion in this tip but it's not completely without stats. Two of the three wins Tranmere have recorded in pre-season have been by just the solitary goal.
Total Goals: Under 2.5
The final prediction we're making is that the game will be lacking goals. Two of the last three head to head matches have ended up under the 2.5 mark. Tranmere's last five games have served up a total of just nine goals; that's an average of just 1.8 per match. Then you have Walsall have seen more goals in their last five with 12 in total but that's still an average south of 2.5 at 2.4. On top of having game averages that support our prediction both sides have also seen three of the last five games end under 2.5.
Tranmere vs Walsall: Match preview
Tranmere
Tranmere had a decent if unspectacular season last year but their form fell away towards the end of the campaign. Regardless, they've been performing well in pre-season with their best result perhaps the 1-0 win they recorded over Rangers. With Jay Spearing and new signing Callum McManaman likely to be featuring in midfield, they should be capable of dictating the play.
Walsall
Walsall's form during pre-season has not been good with just one win recorded alongside three defeats and a draw. To make matters worse one of their marquee signings – the experienced Stephen Ward from Ipswich – is expected to miss out on the opening day. The good news is that Walsall have a sensational record when it comes to facing Tranmere.
