Transfer Window Bookmakers and Markets

Most of the major bookmakers will have transfer window markets available, but not all will cover the same ones.

Skybet provides a vast amount of transfer window bets, due in part to their ‘request a bet' feature. This feature allows punters to ask for a certain bet, e.g Jadon Sancho to join Man Utd, and Skybet then provides the odds and publishes the market for anyone else to bet on.

Betfair also have their own section named ‘Transfer Specials' that can be found under the ‘Specials' section. Here Betfair provides a selection of possible future transfers that currently include the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Paul Pogba and Serio Aguero.

Speculation over the futures of all of these big-name players is rife over social media, tabloid back pages, and dedicated football news websites. PaddyPower have a transfer specials page of their own and cover most of the same markets as Skybet and Betfair.

William Hill offer their own Transfer Specials, as do BetVictor, much like Betfair, but their system doesn't seem to get updated as often as the two above mentioned bookmakers. Where there is a lot of interest surrounding a football player's future, there is huge interest in the betting markets that offer odds on the player's next possible club. Transfer betting is very popular, especially in the build-up to the reopening of the transfer window, so bookmakers are well prepared in advance offering odds on all the latest major transfer speculation.

Transfer Window Overview and Betting Tips

betfair transfer betting

This summer's Premier League Transfer Window opened on the 27th of July and closed on the 5th of October. Premier League clubs cannot sign any players following the 5th October until the transfer window reopens on 1st January. However, there was a stipulation that allowed Premier League clubs to complete deals and other teams from England to complete deals between one another for an extra 11-days following the close of the summer transfer window.

Here are a selection of the deals that went through on the 5th October involving Premier League clubs,

  • Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles to Manchester United
  • Thomas Partey to Arsenal
  • Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Fulham
  • Theo Walcott to Southampton on-loan
  • Ben Godfrey to Everton

The summer transfer window is supposed to give the Premier League clubs chance to buy and sell the required number of players to have a squad that can operate successfully through to the winter transfer window in January. Before the transfer windows were in place, teams could buy and sell players throughout the season at any point. This created issues for clubs battling in the bottom half of the table as they could lose their best players to ‘bigger' clubs and find it very difficult to replace them with an equally talented player.

More business is done during the summer transfer window as this is when Premier League clubs feel they can get in their required personnel at the fairest price. Often during the winter transfer window, we see more ‘panic' buys. This is where a club or manager will often pay over the odds for a particular player in the hopes that it turns their club's fortunes around.

For many clubs, the problem with buying during the winter transfer window is that is placed in the middle of the Premier League season, and clubs are far less willing to lose their best players knowing they might not have the time to bring in an adequate replacement. The winter transfer window is only open for one month, from the 1st of January through to the 31st.

Traditional Transfer Window Dates Across Europe

The Premier League summer transfer window traditionally opens on 17th May and closes on the 9th of August. Recent worldwide events have caused this window to change during the 2020/21 campaign. The winter transfer window always opens on 1st January and closes on the 31st of that month.

Across France, Germany and Spain's top leagues, the summer window opens on 1st July and closes on the 2nd September. The winter window opens on the 1st January, just like in England, but remains open until 2nd February.

Italy's summer transfer window matches that of Spain, Germany and France, 1st July-2nd September, but their winter window opens on the 2nd January and closes on the 31st of that month.

In Scotland, the summer transfer window begins on 9th June and ends on 1st September. During the winter period, the transfer window is open between 1st January-1st February.

The Netherlands' summer window doesn't open until 11th June and closes a day earlier than many of their European counterpart's, on 1st September.

Deadline Day: A big betting event!

transfer deadline day

The final day of any of the transfer windows is referred to as ‘deadline day'. Deadline day has become a spectacle for fans of Premier League clubs who will often have one eye on their television, phone, tablet or computer waiting to see who their club buys or sells throughout the day.

Fans will even watch coverage of deadline day from morning until night, eagerly awaiting the latest developments surrounding their particular club. However, deadline day now ends at 5 pm BST instead of midnight as it once used to, and this has taken away some of the excitement surrounding the event.

Here is a list of some of the most famous deals to happen on deadline day.

  • 2018, Lucas Moura from PSG to Spurs
  • 2008, Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham to Man Utd
  • 2013, Marouane Fellaini from Everton to Man Utd
  • 2015, Anthony Martial from Monaco to Man Utd
  • 2006, Carlos Tevez & Javier Mascherano from Corinthians to West Ham
  • 2006, Ashley Cole from Arsenal to Chelsea
  • 2011, Andy Carroll from Newcastle to Liverpool
  • 2003, Clause Makelele from Real Madrid to Chelsea
  • 2013, Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid to Arsenal
  • 2010, Luis Suarez from Ajax to Liverpool
  • 2004, Wayne Rooney from Everton to Man Utd
  • 2008. Robinho from Real Madrid to Man City
  • 2011, Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea
