What Is The Forsyth Barr Stadium Like?

The Forsyth Barr Stadium really is a one-of-a-kind stadium. It is one of many multi-purpose stadium’s in New Zealand, the Forsyth Barr Stadium is the World’s first fully enclosed grassed stadium and it was opened in 2011 by then-New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key to replace the Carisbrook Stadium.

The stadium’s roof was constructed with a clear ETFE roof which was supplied and installed by Vector Folitec who also supplied the same materials to help build the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Water Cube in Beijing.

The roof has an internal height of 37 metres with the external height measuring at 47 metres tall. The roof is covered with 20,500 square metre of ETFE Transparent Roofing Material and was designed to be built to face north to optimise the sun in a Southern Hemisphere Winter, however, it was constructed facing in a North-West direction. Rainwater is collected from the roof’s surface and recycled to irrigate the pitch.

The stadium’s North and South stands have permanent seating with both East and West being built with removable seating. The West Stand area is officially called Mitre 10 Megan Stand and is popular amongst Students.
