Russia win

Stanislav Cherchesov has seen his team make a wonderful start to the World Cup qualification group. The back-to-back wins have put Russia as firm favourites to qualify as group winners. Despite some talented names in the squad, Slovakia have begun the campaign with back-to-back draws. There is not much confidence within the hosts.

Total goals over 2.5

Russia continue to be involved in high-scoring goal-fests. The team has witnessed over 2.5 goals in all of their last four encounters. Slovakia are not expected to roll over and concede a defeat. After draws against Cyprus and Malta, the hosts are not exactly in great shape at the back. Russia have the potential to score more than two goals on their own and this could produce a high-scoring match.

Anytime goalscorer

Artem Dzyuba has had a fantastic run so far with three goals in his first two match appearances. He is a major threat for Russia with six goals in the last five matches – including appearances in the Russian Premier League.

Slovakia vs Russia: Team News + Match Preview

Slovakia

Slovakia have struggled quite badly in the qualification matches for the World Cup. The win over minnows Malta back in 2017 is the last success for Slovakia, who have since gone five World Cup qualification matches without a victory. The team is finding it difficult to put together a winning combination. The positive in the opening match would be the clean sheet, but the two goals conceded against Malta have taken the wind out of the sails.

Russia

Stanislav Cherchesov will have every reason to smile. The back-to-back victories have put Russia in a very strong position to take on the other top teams in the group – Slovenia and Croatia. The team has been getting goals for fun, but it is now time for Stanislav Cherchesov to focus on doing his team’s defence a major makeover. The goals in the first two group matches have led to Dzyuba being the joint top scorer in the group.
