Both Teams to Score

Both Standard Liege and Genk were among the most reliable goal-scoring outfits in Belgium last season and we expect both clubs to get on the scoresheet in Friday’s season opener. Standard failed to register in only six of their 34 league fixtures in 2020/21, while Genk found the net in 30 of their 34 top-tier matches. It’s also worth noting that both teams notched in each of the last two encounters between Liege and Genk, and we expect that pattern to continue this week.

Over 1.5 Genk Team Goals

Only champions Club Brugge scored more often than Genk last term and De Smurfen should be just as potent in 2021/22 after they managed to hold on to their most prized assets in attack. Genk – who averaged 1.97 goals per 90 minutes last season – scored twice in each of their two skirmishes with Standard Liege and they are priced generously to repeat the trick on Friday.

Theo Bongonda to Score Anytime

Genk star Theo Bongonda bagged an impressive 16 goals last season and the 25-year-old is already up and running for the 2021/22 campaign thanks to his Super Cup effort against Club Brugge on July 17. Bongonda scored for Genk when they last visited Standard Liege in April and the confident finisher is among the prime candidates to make a similar impact on Friday.

Standard Liege vs Genk: Match Preview

Standard Liege

Standard Liege achieved a noteworthy 6th place finish in Belgium last season in manager Mbaye Leye’s first year in charge and the Reds should be firmly in the mix of European qualification places again in 2021/22. Standard had a modest transfer window between seasons, though the loss of promising defender Zinho Vanheusden to Italian giants Inter Milan was a blow.

Genk

Genk followed up their 4th place finish in the regular 2021/22 season with a superb performance in the Championship Round where they beat eventual winners Club Brugge twice, and their displays against the division’s top sides suggests are capable of mounting a title challenge this term under John van den Brom. Winger Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye – who claimed 11 assists in the Netherlands last year – looks an interesting summer capture from Willem II.
