NRG Stadium in the global spotlight at World Cup 2026
NRG Stadium is taking centre stage at the 2026 World Cup, hosting seven matches in total – five group-stage fixtures and two knockout ties. During the tournament, the venue is operating as Houston Stadium in line with FIFA regulations prohibiting corporate-sponsored names.
Local officials expect the tournament to generate around $1.5 billion in economic impact through visitor spending, hotel stays, tax revenue and event-related activity, underlining the significance of the competition for both the stadium and the wider city.
The venue, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans, will temporarily be known as Houston Stadium during the World Cup due to FIFA regulations prohibiting corporate sponsorship names.
NRG Stadium to become Reliant Stadium from August 2026
NRG Stadium is currently operating as Houston Stadium for the duration of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in line with FIFA’s clean-venue policy prohibiting corporate-sponsored names. The NRG branding was removed from the stadium in April ahead of the tournament.
In a move welcomed by Houstonians, NRG Energy confirmed in April 2026 that the venue will revert to its original name -Reliant Stadium, when the World Cup concludes, with new signage in place before the Houston Texans’ first preseason game in August. The change was approved by the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation following a survey showing 90% of Houston-area customers supported the return of the Reliant name.
The stadium opened as Reliant Stadium in 2002, before being renamed NRG Stadium in 2014 when NRG Energy acquired Reliant’s consumer business. The surrounding complex will also revert to Reliant Park.

For example, sign interpreters are available to assist those with hearing problems. Assisted listening devices are also available on the ground for such individuals.
