The Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, also known as Matmut Atlantique, is the home stadium of FC Bordeaux. The club have historically been regulars in the top flight of French football but they are currently playing in Ligue 2.
The stadium itself was opened in 2015 following three years of construction work. The stadium was built to not only be the new home of FC Bordeaux, who previously played their matches at the Stade Chaban-Delmas but to be a multi-purpose arena fit to host music concerts and other events.
Opening in 2015, the stadium hosted five matches at Euro 2016, including one quarter-final. It also hosted five matches at the 2023 Rugby World Cup and will host seven matches at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
From the outside, the modern stadium resembles a temple with countless pillars propping the stadium up. Entering the stadium and finding your seat is quite unique as it blends the outside with the inside with fans getting an open look of the stadium’s surroundings as they climb the grand staircases.
Inside, there isn’t a bad seat in the house at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, which has a capacity of 42,115. The stadium was built with ‘light and elegance’ in mind and it shows. Even once you are in your seats with the roof over your heads, you will still feel like you are in the open due to the clever design.
The stadium is two-tiered all the way around and does look a little like a bowl from the inside, which makes it look very much like a ‘template’ newly built stadium. However, its exterior and semi-open feel more than make up for that.
The two tiers are separated by a row of 60 executive boxes while there are also seven suites with terraces dotted around the stadium for those who want to watch the match in style.
There are four stands at the stadium which are simply named North, East, South and West.
Visiting supporters are placed in the North Stand behind one of the goals and the facilities are excellent. As already mentioned, there isn’t a bad view from anywhere in the stadium and this applies to the away end.
The room between seats is decent, as you would expect with a new stadium, while fans are able to take advantage of food and drink offerings in the concourse at half-time and before kick-off.
The one downside to the away end is that it’s opposite the South Stand where Bordeaux’s loudest and most passionate fans stand/sit. This makes it difficult to create an atmosphere as most of the noise comes from the other end.
There isn’t much to shout about nearby the stadium as it is 6km away from the city centre. If you want a drink beforehand, you should head to the city centre and then use the tram system to get to the stadium (explained below).
Three of the best pubs in Bordeaux for football fans:
- Delirium Café Bordeaux (30 Quai Virginie Hériot, 33300 Bordeaux, France)
- Home Run Bar (106 Quai Lawton, 33300 Bordeaux, France)
- Molly Malone’s (83 Quai des Chartrons, 33300 Bordeaux, France)
By car
By car, you will need to take exit 4/4a/4b from the A630 and then follow the signs for the stadium.
By public transport
The easiest way to to get to the stadium is to use the local tram network. Tram lines B and C will take you close to the stadium but C is preferable.
Board the tram from the main rail station in Bordeaux (St Jean) and then depart at Parc des Expositions – Stade Matmut-Atlantique. The stadium will be visible once you depart the stadium.
If you fancy a bit of a walk then you can take tram B to Berges de la Garonne and then walk 30 minutes to the stadium.
There is plenty of parking at the stadium but spaces need to be pre-booked so if you are heading to a match at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux in the coming weeks, contact the club via their website.
In total, there are 8,000 car parking spaces around the stadium and everyone who purchased a disabled ticket will have automatic access to an accessible car parking space.
