The stunning Eden Park is situated right in the middle of suburban housing in the largest city which is located on the North Island of New Zealand. The Stadium itself is a multi-purpose stadium which hosts cricket and rugby mainly.

The impressive marina in Auckland is located just a short drive from Eden Park stadium. Each of the four stands are unique to one another which gives it an incredibly look with two of the stands, the two smallest, being behind both of the goals is roofless whilst the South stand which is by far the biggest stand has an incredible roof which seemingly towers over the stadium.

The land in which Eden Park is built upon has a very rich history. The land was built on a former swampland which was fed by lava caverns created by Mount Eden and Mount Albert over 30,000 years ago. A local group , the Tamaki Maori, used the swamp to collect things such as materials and food.

In 1845, a farmer who originally came from Cornwall, England, purchased the land with the idea of building a stadium to host the farmers favourite sport which was cricket. The ground opened in 1900 and just three years later cricket was being placed there, with the help of local cricket enthusiast, Harry Ryan.

In the stadium’s early years, Eden Park needed a lot of attention. The site had to be cleared of stone walls and persistent drainage problems slowed progress. Those issues hit hard in 1907 when, within just a few months, the ground was flooded twice after separate heavy rainstorms.

By 1910, the Eden District Cricket Club could no longer justify the cost of maintaining the site and approached the Auckland Cricket Association to take over its running. Two years later, the ground was formally named Eden Park and ownership passed from John Walters, the Cornish farmer who originally held it, to the trustees of the cricket association. Football didn’t arrive at Eden Park until 1947, when New Zealand’s national side hosted South Africa. It would then be another decade before the sport returned, with the Kiwis facing Austrian outfit FK Austria Wien at the famous venue.

Club football was first played here in 2011 when Wellington Phoenix played Adelaide United with the game finishing as a 1-1 draw.
