The 2026 FIFA World Cup was always going to be big.

A record 48 teams, 16 host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and some of the largest stadiums ever used for a major tournament.

Even before a ball was kicked, FIFA was projecting unprecedented attendance numbers, and with that came the usual debates over ticket pricing, empty seats, and whether the official figures truly reflect who’s actually in the ground.

With the group stage now underway, FootballGroundGuide is tracking every match to see where the biggest crowds are turning up, which venues are struggling to fill, and how the tournament’s atmosphere is shaping up across North America.

This page will be updated regularly throughout the competition.

Biggest crowds at the 2026 World Cup so far

The early leader, and no surprise, is the Estadio Azteca, which opened the tournament with a full house as Mexico beat South Africa in front of 80,824 fans.

The New York New Jersey venue – host for the final – isn't far behind, also hitting its maximum of 80,663 for Brazil vs Morocco.

Top Attendances (as of 18th June)

1. 80,824 – Mexico vs South Africa (Mexico City)

2. 80,824 – Colombia vs Uzbekistan (Mexico City)

3. 80,663 – Brazil vs Morocco (New York New Jersey)

4. 80,545 – France vs Senegal (New York New Jersey)

5. 70,492 – USA vs Paraguay (Los Angeles)

U.S. venues are unsurprisingly strong, with Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston and Atlanta all pushing close to capacity.

The expanded format means more matches, but so far the demand appears to be holding up.

Smallest crowds at the 2026 World Cup so far

The lowest attendance to date came at BMO Field in Toronto, where 42,942 watched Ghana vs Panama – still a strong figure, filling 99.8% of the venue's capacity, but it becomes only one of three matches under 50,000 so far.

Lowest Attendances (as of 18th June)

1. 42,942 – Ghana vs Panama (Toronto)

2. 44,985 – South Korea vs Czechia (Guadalajara)

3. 43,002 – Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina (Toronto)

4. 50,987 – Sweden vs Tunisia (Monterrey)

5. 52,497 – Australia vs Turkey (Vancouver)

Canadian venues are performing well but naturally have smaller capacities than the giant U.S. stadiums.

Monterrey and Guadalajara are also seeing slightly lower numbers than Mexico City’s blockbuster opener.
