Football supporters travelling to New York for the 2026 World Cup have been handed a major boost after state lawmakers approved a temporary change to alcohol licensing laws for the duration of the tournament.

The measure will allow bars, pubs and restaurants across New York State to remain open until 4am, creating a far more fan-friendly atmosphere as the world's biggest sporting event arrives on America's East Coast.

The bill, approved on June 9th, temporarily aligns the entire state's closing times with New York City's long-standing 4am licensing rules.

Under existing regulations, many counties across New York are required to stop serving alcohol much earlier, with some venues forced to close at 1am, 2am or 3am depending on location.

The temporary legislation will remove those regional differences from June 11th through to July 21st, allowing hospitality venues across the state to remain open later throughout the World Cup.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the move would help local businesses benefit from the tournament while giving supporters more opportunities to enjoy the event.

The state has already introduced measures aimed at helping venues host World Cup-related events, including a streamlined permit process for outdoor screening parties.

The decision could prove particularly popular among travelling supporters, including England fans, with Thomas Tuchel's side scheduled to face Panama at MetLife Stadium in their final group-stage fixture.

FGG says: A welcome boost for England fans and more

For all the criticism surrounding ticket prices, transport costs and accommodation expenses at this World Cup, this is one decision that should be welcomed by supporters.

The tournament is about far more than what happens inside stadiums, and many fans will spend much of their time soaking up the atmosphere in bars, fan zones and city centres.

Allowing venues to stay open later gives local businesses a chance to benefit from the influx of visitors while also helping create the kind of festival atmosphere that major international tournaments thrive on.

For England fans and the thousands of other supporters expected to descend on New York and New Jersey this summer, it should make for some memorable nights regardless of what happens on the pitch.
