With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, concerns are beginning to surface over Gillette Stadium, as FIFA finds itself at odds with local officials over a key licensing matter.

The Boston venue is set to host as many as seven fixtures, including England's group game against Ghana on June 23rd, as well as a Round of 32 and quarter-final clash.

Why is Gillette Stadium in dispute with FIFA ahead of the 2026 World Cup?

According to The Athletic, FIFA are yet to secure an entertainment licence required to stage World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium.

The problem centres on funding for safety and security, with the town of Foxborough demanding £6 million to cover manpower and infrastructure costs during the tournament.

Under the hosting agreements, each city staging matches is responsible for policing, safety and protection costs. Host cities can apply for financial support after a federal commitment from United States President Donald Trump, but that funding must later be reimbursed.

Local officials initially thought that the Kraft Group – owners of the stadium and the New England Patriots – would cover the costs, as they do for NFL games.

However, with the venue effectively handed over to FIFA for the 2026 World Cup, the Krafts have declined, and the town insists local taxpayers should not foot the bill.

An entertainment licence “won't be granted” unless the £6 million request is met, as per Foxborough Select Board chair Bill Yukna.

FGG says: A worrying delay that needs a swift resolution for the 2026 World Cup

While this dispute is unlikely to derail the 2026 World Cup entirely, it does highlight the complex financial realities behind hosting major tournaments.

England are one of the many nations set to play at Gillette Stadium early on in the tournament, so FIFA will need to act quickly to resolve this standoff.

Otherwise, uncertainty around this venue, and maybe others, will become another unwanted distraction ahead of the summer.
