Aston Villa told “single most important thing” to maximise Villa Park North Stand revenue

Aston Villa's ambitious £100 million redevelopment of the North Stand at Villa Park has been hailed as a transformational project for the club, but former striker Stan Collymore believes its long-term success hinges on one crucial factor, and that is keeping manager Unai Emery.

The redevelopment, which will increase Villa Park's capacity beyond 50,000 while significantly expanding hospitality facilities, is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the club's modern history.

With Villa now firmly established among the Premier League's top sides and competing regularly in Europe, the timing of the investment has been widely viewed as a statement of intent.

Collymore believes the club are making the right move, but insists maintaining success on the pitch is just as important as expanding the stadium.

Why is the North Stand redevelopment so important?

Speaking to FootballGroundGuide, Collymore said the project comes at the perfect moment in Aston Villa's rise under Emery.

“It's a huge step. Anything that takes Villa Park beyond 50,000 capacity, while also increasing the amount of corporate hospitality, is going to generate significantly more revenue.

“Villa have to make hay while the sun shines. While Unai Emery is at the club, while they're winning trophies, qualifying for the Champions League and competing in Europe, this is exactly the time to invest in the stadium and grow the fanbase.

“It's not just about rewarding existing supporters – it's about attracting new fans as well and making sure those 50,000-plus seats are full every week.”

The expansion is expected to strengthen Aston Villa's commercial position by increasing matchday income through additional ticket sales, hospitality offerings and premium experiences. It also reflects the club's ambition to establish itself as a consistent presence among Europe's elite.

With Villa Park already regarded as one of English football's most iconic stadiums, the redevelopment is designed to modernise facilities while preserving the atmosphere that has become synonymous with the ground.

Why does Collymore believe Emery is the key?

While the financial benefits of a larger stadium are obvious, Collymore believes they can only be fully realised if Aston Villa continue to compete at the highest level.

“The key is keeping the success going. I don't expect Villa to suddenly drop into mid-table because I think Emery is a good enough manager, and I expect the club to continue backing him.

“But if they did slip down to 12th, 13th or 14th, then filling a bigger stadium becomes much harder. That's why keeping Emery is probably the single most important thing.

“If Villa can keep him, they'll have every chance of remaining in the European places, which means more revenue, bigger crowds and the ability to keep reinvesting.”

Collymore believes the coming years could define Aston Villa's long-term future, with the club having an opportunity to cement its place among the Premier League's established elite.

“The next three to five years are hugely important in Villa's history. If they get this right, they can establish themselves alongside the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham as one of the Premier League's leading clubs.”

FGG says: Expanding Villa Park is about far more than adding seats.

Aston Villa are investing during one of the strongest periods in their recent history, and the redevelopment should significantly boost both matchday and commercial revenue.

However, Collymore's point is an important one, as Stadiums generate their greatest value when teams are consistently successful, and keeping Emery could ultimately prove every bit as important as completing the North Stand itself.
