Away fans’ guide to Brussels: Key information for Newcastle fans

Newcastle's Champions League campaign didn't get off to the best of starts on matchday one, with the Magpies losing 2-1 at home to Barcelona.

While that defeat has put them on the back foot, there is still plenty of time for them to pick up the required number of points to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

Their next match in the competition is a clash against Royal Union Saint Gilloise away from home, and it's the sort of match that has a banana skin written all over it.

If you are one of the many Newcastle fans making the trip over to Brussels for the match, then our guide below has all the key information you need to know.

How many Newcastle fans are going to Brussels?

Due to the club's usual stadium, Stade Joseph Marien, not meeting UEFA's standards, the match between Royal Union Saint Gilloise and Newcastle is taking place at Lotto Park, the home of Anderlecht. This has afforded Newcastle more tickets, but their allocation still isn't huge at 1,058.

However, as Brussels is such a quick, cheap and straightforward journey from the United Kingdom, and the fact that it's Newcastle's first Champions League away match of the season, more than 1,500 Newcastle fans are expected to travel over to the Belgian capital for the match.

Where will Newcastle fans sit at Lotto PARK?

The away end at Lotto Park is located in the upper tier of the southwest corner of Tribune 1. In other words, it's in the upper left-hand side behind one of the goals. While that sounds far away on paper, it isn't, as the stadium is compact and relatively small. The away end is very steep, so Newcastle fans will feel as if they are right on top of the action.

Where to eat & drink for Newcastle fans in Brussels

Belgian beer is famous for being some of the best (and strongest) in Europe, so Newcastle fans won't be short of options when it comes to finding somewhere to have a drink. In terms of food, there are restaurants around every corner, as you would expect in a European capital city.

Some of the best places to drink in Brussels for football fans include:

  • Celtica – Rue du Marché aux Poulets 55, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium
  • La Porte Noire – Rue des Alexiens 67, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium
  • Bar Des Amis – Rue Sainte-Catherine 30, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium

It's worth noting that while the price of beer may seem expensive, you are getting more for your money, as some beers in Brussels are as strong as 12/13%.

The local police have urged Newcastle fans to gather in the La Bourse area of the city centre for the match, so this may well turn out to be where you will find fellow supporters.

How to get to Lotto Park: Guide for Newcastle fans in Brussels

The easiest way to get to Lotto Park from the centre of Brussels is to use the Metro. Fans should take the Metro 5 line and depart VEEWEYDE station. From here, the stadium is around 1km away on foot. Exit the station and travel east down ‘Avenue Eugene Ysaye' and then go left at the first roundabout you come across onto ‘Avenue Theo Verbeeck'. The away entrance will be on your right.
