Barcelona have taken another cautious step in the Camp Nou renovation by making an important request ahead of the 2027/28 campaign.
The club want to avoid any disruption while one of the most complex phases of the stadium project is completed.
Barcelona ask to play 2027/28 opener at the Olympic Stadium
According to reports in Spain, Barcelona have officially asked LaLiga for permission to begin the 2027/28 season at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys while work continues on the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou.
The request comes as the club prepares for the installation of the new stadium roof, with work expected to begin in June 2027 and last around four-and-a-half months until mid-October.
Although the projected timeline suggests the work could be completed sooner, Barcelona have opted for a cautious approach in case of any construction delays.
As a result, the club has requested to play all home fixtures during the opening phase of the season at Montjuic, including Champions League league-phase matches.

The decision has also been influenced by UEFA regulations, which require clubs to play all league-phase home matches in the same stadium.
It would mark another temporary return to the Olympic Stadium, which served as Barcelona's home throughout the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons and for the opening weeks of the 2026/27 campaign before the club moved back into a partially completed Camp Nou.
For now, though, Barcelona remain on course to play the entirety of the upcoming 2026/27 season at Camp Nou, with the Joan Gamper Trophy scheduled for August 19th before their first LaLiga home fixture later that month.
FGG says: Planning ahead makes complete sense
After the delays and phased reopening that have already characterised the Camp Nou redevelopment, Barcelona's cautious approach is understandable.
Temporarily returning to Montjuic for the opening months of the 2027/28 season would provide valuable flexibility while one of the most technically demanding parts of the project is completed, helping ensure the finished stadium is delivered without unnecessary pressure or compromise.
