Few stadiums in world football can rival the pre-match spectacle of Anfield.

Before every home fixture, the Kop End is a sea of flags, banners and scarves, creating an unmistakable wall of colour and noise. On big European nights under the lights, the scene can be absolutely breathtaking.

Occasionally, Liverpool supporters go even further, unveiling giant tifos that capture the identity, history and emotion of the club.

FootballGroundGuide takes a look at some of the most powerful displays seen on Merseyside over the years:

Liverpool fans' emotional farewell to Jurgen Klopp

When Jurgen Klopp took charge of his final match at Anfield as Liverpool manager, supporters marked the moment with a full-stadium tifo in his honour.

The German had spent nearly a decade at the helm, transforming the club and ending their 30-year wait for a league title. He also restored Liverpool’s status as a European force, turning Anfield into a fortress once again.

The farewell display was both celebratory and emotional, a fitting send-off for a manager who had reconnected the team and the terraces.

As “You’ll Never Walk Alone” rang out, the choreography served as a thank you from a fanbase that had embraced him as one of their own.

Remembering Hillsborough and honouring Diogo Jota

Some of Liverpool’s most poignant displays are rooted in remembrance.

The club has never allowed the memory of the 97 supporters who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster to fade.

Each year, tributes take place at Anfield, and on major anniversaries, the Kop has unveiled displays and banners to ensure those names are never forgotten. It is a reflection of a club and city united in grief and solidarity.

More recently, Anfield witnessed another deeply moving tribute. At the first competitive home match following the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, supporters paid their respects in touching fashion.

Ahead of kick-off in the Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, fans held up coordinated placards spelling out “DJ20” and “AS30” across two stands during a period of silence. Liverpool’s players stood arm-in-arm around the centre circle, while both teams wore black armbands.

A rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” followed, as banners, scarves and flags bearing Jota’s name were raised across the ground. An image of Jota and Silva appeared on the big screen, and the atmosphere inside Anfield was one of collective heartbreak and admiration.

It was a classy and dignified tribute, the kind that underlines why Anfield is renowned not just for its noise, but for its unity too.

Big European Nights and Liverpool Club Icons

European nights have long shaped Liverpool’s identity, and some of the Kop’s most iconic displays reflect that legacy.

Ahead of the opening game of the 2019/20 season, following victory in the Champions League final months earlier, supporters unveiled a full-Kop mosaic celebrating the club’s sixth European Cup.

A giant “6” formed alongside the words “Champions of Europe,” a bold reminder of Liverpool’s continental pedigree.

Four years earlier, in 2015, Anfield paid tribute to another club icon.

For Steven Gerrard’s final appearance at the stadium, a full-stand mosaic spelling “S 8 G” honoured the legendary No. 8. It was a powerful goodbye to a player who had embodied Liverpool for nearly two decades.

Both displays blended pride and emotion, all hallmarks of the Kop’s most memorable moments.

FGG Verdict: The Kop at its very best

From emotional farewells and heartfelt tributes to bold European statements, Anfield’s tifos and displays capture everything that defines Liverpool Football Club.

They are not merely pre-match spectacles, they are often expressions of identity, a remembrance of history, heroes honoured and unity preserved.

On big nights, when the flags ripple across the Kop and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” echoes into the Merseyside sky, the visuals inside Anfield can be as powerful as the football itself.
