Supporters at Villa Park have embraced tifo culture in recent seasons, with the Holte End often providing the backdrop for some of the club’s most eye-catching displays.

While not as frequent as at some grounds, Aston Villa’s tifos tend to carry strong themes, celebrating heritage, honouring local icons and recognising key figures within the club.

On big European nights and derby occasions, the stadium transforms into a sea of claret and blue.

FootballGroundGuide takes a look at some of the standout displays seen at Villa Park.

The iconic ‘Villa Villan' returns

One of the most unique tifos in English football arrived during Aston Villa’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Ahead of a European clash with Juventus in 2024, fans in the Holte End unveiled a giant banner featuring the “Villa Villan” – a historic club character dating back over a century.

Dressed in a long coat and pointy hat, complete with a distinctive moustache, the figure has appeared in club folklore since its early days, featuring in publications like the Sports Argus and even on vintage memorabilia.

The modern revival gave the character a fresh twist.

In another display against Premier League rivals Chelsea earlier this season, the Villan was shown holding a set of playing cards, including one reading “Aston Villa, Ace of Clubs.”

Blending humour, history and identity, the “Villa Villan” tifos have quickly become some of the most recognisable visuals at Villa Park.

Iconic and heartfelt tributes at Villa Park

Villa supporters have also used tifos to celebrate figures connected to the club and the city.

One of the most memorable came ahead of a Champions League night against Celtic, when a huge display honoured Ozzy Osbourne just a few months before his passing.

The tifo depicted the rock legend wearing a Villa shirt, surrounded by imagery of the club’s history and the phrase “Up the Villa.”

As “Allez, Allez, Allez” echoed around the ground, the display perfectly captured the crossover between Birmingham’s musical heritage and its football culture.

It was more than just a tribute as it symbolised Villa’s global appeal while staying rooted in its local identity, with Osbourne embodying both.

Aston Villa stars past and present honoured

Villa Park tifos have also celebrated the players who represent the badge.

A standout example came ahead of a West Midlands derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers, when a giant banner was unveiled to mark John McGinn’s 300th appearance for the club.

The Holte End paid tribute to the captain’s commitment and leadership, underlining his importance during a period of resurgence for Aston Villa.

These kinds of displays, whether for milestone appearances or key contributors, reflect the strong connection between players and supporters at Villa Park.

FGG Verdict: Heritage and identity at heart of Villa Park displays

Aston Villa’s tifos may not be as frequent as at some other Premier League grounds, but when they arrive, they are not only absolutely striking, but they all carry real meaning.

From the revival of the historic “Villa Villan” to tributes for icons like Ozzy Osbourne and modern leaders such as John McGinn, each display ties back to the club’s identity and roots.

And as the club continues to grow on the European stage, these moments are becoming an increasingly special part of matchdays in claret and blue.
