Bristol Rovers supporters have been handed their clearest indication yet about the future of the club's long-term home, with chairman Hussain AlSaeed admitting a move away from the Memorial Stadium is now the leading outcome.

The Gas have spent years examining ways to modernise or redevelop the stadium, but fresh comments suggest attention is increasingly turning towards a completely new site.

Bristol Rovers increasingly expected to move away from Memorial Stadium

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol this week, AlSaeed revealed that relocating away from the Memorial Stadium is currently the “most likely” option under consideration after redevelopment studies raised several “red flags”.

Rovers have explored expanding and modernising the Mem in recent years, investing more than £400,000 into surveys, studies and architectural work. However, the club believes several practical obstacles are making redevelopment increasingly difficult.

The chairman pointed specifically to issues around the site's location and surrounding area, with the Memorial Stadium sitting in the densely populated Horfield district close to Gloucester Road, where available space is extremely limited.

AlSaeed confirmed the League Two club are now assessing multiple alternative sites in and around Bristol alongside local developers and investors, although he stressed no firm decision has yet been made.

He also acknowledged supporters' frustrations after previous stadium projects failed to materialise, insisting he did not want to make promises before plans became concrete.

The Memorial Stadium has been Bristol Rovers' home since 1996, but ownership also see a new stadium as a way of creating long-term financial sustainability after losses of £7 million and significant owner investment in recent years.

FGG says: A clearer picture for Bristol Rovers fans

At least supporters now have a much clearer picture of where things stand after years of uncertainty and false starts. Although the prospect of leaving the Memorial Stadium would still be an emotional moment for many supporters.

Nearly three decades of memories aren’t easily replaced, even if modern facilities and long‑term growth make strong business sense.

The real challenge for Bristol Rovers will be ensuring any move feels like genuine progress, and not simply walking away from a place that has been home for so long.
