Borussia Monchengladbach are preparing to introduce a major change to the traditional matchday experience, with supporters potentially entering games without needing to show a ticket at all.

The Bundesliga side are embracing biometric technology as clubs continue to look for faster and more personalised stadium experiences.

Borussia Monchengladbach turn to biometric scanners to reduce queues

Gladbach are planning to become one of the first clubs in Europe to use biometric access technology as an alternative to conventional ticketing systems.

The technology would allow supporters to enter Borussia-Park using facial recognition or other biometric identification methods rather than scanning a physical or digital ticket. The club hope it will reduce queues and improve movement around their 54,000-capacity stadium.

The project forms part of a wider partnership with US company Extreme Networks, whose systems are already used throughout the NFL and Major League Baseball. Alongside entry systems, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to support stadium operations, including payment terminals, hospitality services and access controls.

While biometric technology has already become increasingly common in parts of American sport, its use in Europe has been far more limited due to stricter privacy and data protection rules.

Previous examples have largely focused on identifying banned supporters or improving security, rather than streamlining the general fan experience.

FGG says: Will we see this at UK stadiums anytime soon?

With the news of Gladbach moving with the times, it does feel more like when rather than if.

Premier League clubs are already moving heavily towards digital ticketing, app-based services, cashless payments and personalised stadium experiences, so biometrics feel like the next step in that evolution.

The technology promises shorter queues and smoother entry, which are exactly the types of improvements clubs are trying to deliver.

The bigger challenge in the UK will probably not be the technology itself, but convincing supporters over privacy concerns. Asking fans to scan a QR code is one thing, but asking them to hand over facial data is another entirely.

But if the systems prove reliable elsewhere and can genuinely improve matchdays without creating headaches, it would not be surprising to see trial schemes appearing in English football sooner rather than later.
