Chelsea football chants: Lyrics of Blue is the Colour, 10 Men Went to Mow & more

Stamford Bridge, with a capacity of just over 40,000, is relatively small compared to the club's other ‘big six' rivals, and as such, Chelsea fans can create an incredible atmosphere at the ground and make it a hostile venue.

Songs have become infamous at the stadium, and here are the lyrics to some of the most well-known Chelsea football chants, including Blue is the Colour, 10 Men Went to Mow and more.

10 Men Went to Mow

Starting out with quite possibly the longest chant ever created, not even Blues fans are certain as to the origins of their famous 10 Men Went to Mow.

The consensus is that it was first sung all the way back in 1981 during a pre-season tour, however, this has never been confirmed.

A song so long that it is rarely ever sung in its entirety, the lyrics to 10 Men Went to Mow are as follows:

One man went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!,
One man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!,
Went to mow a meadow.

Two men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow.

Three men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow! Three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow.

As you may expect, the anthem continues in the same pattern as above, until the last verse is reached – the lyrics for which are:

Ten men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Ten men, nine men, eight men, seven men, six men,
five men, four men, three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow.

Blue is the Colour

The next Chelsea football chant on the list is their equally famous Blue is the Colour anthem. Making several references to Stamford Bridge throughout, the song was first sung in the terraces of the ground in 1972 and has been a fan-favourite ever since.

The official lyrics for the chant are as follows:

Blue is the colour, football is the game,
We're all together, and winning is our aim,
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
'cause Chelsea, Chelsea is our name.

Here at the Bridge whether rain or fine,
We can shine all the time,
Home or away, come and see us play,
You're welcome any day.

Blue is the colour, football is the game,
We're all together, and winning is our aim,
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
'cause Chelsea, Chelsea is our name.

Come to the Shed and we'll welcome you,
Wear your blue and see us through,
Sing loud and clear until the game is done,
Sing Chelsea, everyone.

Over Land and Sea

Also sometimes referred to as We All Follow the Chelsea, Over Land and Sea is a short, catchy tune that gets everybody up off their seats.

Due to a little-known rivalry between Chelsea and Leicester dating back decades, the song even makes a somewhat surprising dig at the East-Midlands club.

The official lyrics to the chant are as follows:

We all follow the Chelsea,
Over land and sea – And Leicester,
We all follow the Chelsea,
Onto victory!

We all follow the Chelsea,
Over land and sea – And Leicester,
We all follow the Chelsea,
Onto Victory!

Blue Flag Flying High

Another famous Chelsea football chant is Blue Flag Flying High – a song that represents the importance of keeping pride in both the team and the club.

Sung to the rhythm of the famous German carol ‘O Tannenbaum', the tune has been a long-standing anthem at  Stamford Bridge and has become synonymous with the club.

The official lyrics for the chant are as follows:

Flying high,
Up in the sky,
We'll keep the blue flag flying high
From Stamford Bridge to Wembley,
We'll keep the blue flag flying high!

Blue Day

The song was first sung in a period of Chelsea's history during which success, from the perspective of accruing silverware, was few and far between. The song makes several references to the club's famous golden era in the seventies and never fails to put every supporter in the stadium into a party-like mood.

Lyrics for the chant go as follows:

The only place to be, every other Saturday,
Is strolling down the Fulham Road,
Meet your mates, have a drink, have a moan and start to think,
Will there ever be a blue tomorrow?

We've waited so long, but we'd wait forever,
Our blood is blue and we would leave you never,
And when we make it, it'll be together…
Oh oh oh.

Chelsea, Chelsea,
Chelsea, Chelsea,
We're gonna make this a blue day.

Chelsea, Chelsea,
Chelsea, Chelsea,
We're gonna make this a blue day.

Oi!
Lalalalala,
Lalalalala,
Lalalalala…

We've got some memories, albeit from the seventies,
When Ossie and co. restored our pride,
Now we've got hope in our team and suddenly it's not a dream,
We'll keep the blue flag flying high.

We've waited so long, but we'd wait forever,
Our blood is blue and we would leave you never,
And when we make it, it'll be together…
Oh oh oh.

Chelsea, Chelsea,
Chelsea, Chelsea,
We're gonna make this a blue day,

Oi!
Lalalalala,
Lalalalala,
Lalalalala…

Now even Heaven is blue today,
You should hear the Chelsea roar,
Hear the Chelsea roar…

Chelsea, Chelsea,
Chelsea, Chelsea,
We're gonna make this a blue day.
