FC Sion have unveiled plans for one of European football's most unusual stadium projects, with a proposed £420m development featuring a rollercoaster, an 80-room hotel and a retractable roof.
The Swiss club, who are competing in the UEFA Conference League this season, want to transform their current Stade de Tourbillon home into a major sports and entertainment destination known as the Cervin Coliseum.
Ambitious stadium rollercoaster plans unveiled
The proposed redevelopment would replace the existing 14,200-capacity ground with a modern venue holding around 21,000 spectators for football matches.
The rollercoaster planned around the stadium's exterior is among the project's most eye-catching features, with the attraction intended to draw visitors even when no football match is taking place.
The wider development would include a retractable roof, an integrated hotel and facilities designed to accommodate concerts and other major events.
The venue could host as many as 33,000 people for concerts, using a configuration that prioritises event space behind one of the goals rather than a conventional stand.
The project is being led by club owner and president Christian Constantin, who is also an architect, and the estimated construction cost is around £420m.

The club have submitted the project for an initial assessment by local authorities, but the proposal has not yet received all the approvals required for construction.
The next stage is expected to involve technical assessments and further development of the plans, with a public consultation process anticipated at some point in 2027.
If the project proceeds as envisaged, the new stadium could be ready by 2033.
The existing Stade de Tourbillon would remain in use while the replacement venue is developed, with plans for its eventual demolition and the creation of football academy pitches on the site.
