Crystal Palace supporters have been dealt a fresh setback regarding the long-awaited redevelopment of Selhurst Park after it emerged that major contractors have stepped away from the £150m stadium project.

According to new reports, Bovis, the construction company, is no longer involved in the scheme to construct the club’s new Main Stand after previously being appointed under a pre-construction services agreement in 2024.

The development is another frustrating twist for Palace fans after the club previously indicated that work on the ambitious redevelopment could begin following the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign.

The project, originally approved by Croydon Council in 2022, is designed to increase Selhurst Park’s capacity by around 8,000 seats to approximately 34,000 while significantly modernising the club’s oldest facilities.

Adding further uncertainty, Morrisroe, the contractor responsible for design, demolition, piling and structural works, is also no longer attached to the redevelopment scheme.

Crystal Palace have yet to formally announce a replacement contractor, although reports suggest the club has now altered its procurement strategy as it attempts to move the project forward after months of delays.

The Eagles had previously described negotiations with contractors as being in their “final planning phase”, with hopes construction would start this summer. However, the latest developments now cast fresh doubt over the timeline for one of the Premier League’s most anticipated stadium upgrades.

Palace continuing preparations behind the scenes

Despite the setback involving contractors, reports indicate work surrounding the redevelopment has continued away from the spotlight in recent months.

Back in January, Palace confirmed they had completed the purchase of six residential properties near Selhurst Park which are set to be demolished to allow construction of the new south-east corner of the stand.

The club also stated at the time that enabling works had “progressed well”, while promising supporters another update regarding the next stage of the redevelopment in due course.

Palace have been based at Selhurst Park since 1924, and chairman Steve Parish has repeatedly stressed the importance of modernising the ground to help the club compete financially with Premier League rivals.

Uncertainty grows over project timeline

The disappearance of two major contractors from the scheme is likely to raise concerns among supporters who have already waited several years for visible progress on the redevelopment.

Originally unveiled before the COVID-19 pandemic, the project has encountered repeated delays linked to planning complications, rising construction costs and wider economic pressures affecting large infrastructure developments across the UK.

Industry reports now suggest Palace may be reassessing how the project will be delivered before officially appointing a new lead contractor.

For supporters, the latest update represents another pause in what has become a prolonged redevelopment process, despite growing optimism earlier this year that construction was finally close to beginning.

FGG says

This is clearly not the update Crystal Palace supporters wanted to hear after years of waiting for the Main Stand redevelopment to finally move beyond the planning stage.

While the club insists preparatory work has continued behind the scenes, losing both Bovis and Morrisroe inevitably creates fresh uncertainty around timelines and delivery. The encouraging aspect for Palace fans is that land acquisition and enabling works appear to have progressed, suggesting the project itself remains alive – but the lack of a confirmed contractor means patience will still be required before diggers fully arrive at Selhurst Park.
