On Saturday, Liverpool and Wolves came together to pay tribute to Diogo Jota in what was the first match between the two clubs since the forward tragically died in the summer.
Emotions were high throughout the afternoon at Anfield, and the football certainly took a backseat for a day that was all about paying tribute to Jota.
Before kick-off, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk walked through the tunnel and on to the pitch alongside two of Jota's sons. Shortly after, banners commemorating Jota were unveiled on the Kop, including one that read ‘Diogo Jota, forever in our hearts'.
Then, in the 18th minute, Wolves fans burst into a rendition of their ‘Diogo' chant, and two minutes later, Anfield rose as one to sing Liverpool's chant for the player.
Rute Cardoso posts emotional response to Jota tribute
Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, was also in attendance at Anfield on Saturday alongside several family members. It was understandably an emotionally charged day for her, but she has since taken the time to post the following message on social media:
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the club and to all the fans for the love, respect and support shown during this incredibly difficult time. Your messages and gestures have meant more than words can express.”

It was reported at the time of Jota's death that Liverpool had paid out his contract in full to Cardoso and had offered to help in any and every way possible. The relationship between the club and their player's wife will likely remain strong for eternity.
FGG says: A difficult day for everyone in attendance, but especially Rute Cardoso
The tributes to Jota will have touched everyone at Anfield on Saturday, but especially Rute Cardoso. It's impossible to imagine what she has been through over the past six months, but as Arne Slot pointed out at the weekend, the coming together of two fanbases showed how poignant and powerful football can be. We can only hope that the outpouring of love for her husband has helped to provide some comfort.
