Everton make dramatic Goodison Park U-turn

At the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Everton are due to leave Goodison Park and move into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Shortly after receiving planning approval from Liverpool City Council in February 2020, the Goodison Legacy project was unveiled. This detailed how Goodison would be demolished and replaced with houses, a care home, retail units and a park.

However, the club's new owners, The Friedkin Group, have now made a drastic U-turn by announcing that Goodison Park will no longer be demolished and instead, it will become the new home of the Everton women's team.

Everton women to play at Goodison Park from the 2025/26 season

In a statement released on Tuesday, 13 May, Everton said that the decision to move the women's team to Goodison Park came after an in-depth review of the Goodison Legacy project by The Friedkin Group. Ultimately, the new owners decided that football must be kept at the famous old stadium.

In further evidence of the club's commitment to the women's team, enhancements will be made to Goodison Park in the coming years to ensure its facilities are modernised. The capacity will remain the same, making it the largest dedicated women's stadium in the UK.

Everton Women currently play at Walton Hall Park, and that ground will continue to be used to serve grassroots women's and girls' football in Liverpool.

The club's CEO, Angus Kinnear, said:

“We know how treasured Goodison is, not only to every Evertonians, but to the game itself, and being able to keep such an iconic stadium at the heart of the legacy project is something that has been incredibly important to us.

“From next season, we are proud to say our women will have an unrivalled permanent home in the WSL – another statement of intent as we look to build the foundations that will help us challenge for trophies.”

FGG says: An early win for The Friedkin Group

The decision to keep Goodison Park standing is one that is a huge win for the club's new owners, regardless of how you look at it. It will help the women's team to grow as they look to push on in the WSL, while it will allow fans (both old and new) to continue to experience the magic of Goodison for the foreseeable future.
