A major policing operation has been confirmed ahead of the first-ever Merseyside Derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with authorities issuing guidance to supporters attending the historic clash.

Everton will host rivals Liverpool on Sunday, April 19, in a sold-out Premier League fixture, with just under 53,000 fans expected inside the stadium.

Police say planning for the match has been ongoing for months in collaboration with both clubs, supporter groups and Liverpool City Council to ensure the event is both safe and enjoyable.

The fixture marks a significant moment as the famous rivalry is played at Everton’s new home for the very first time. Their former home ground, Goodison Park, hosted 120 Merseyside derbies across all competitions.

Police outline visible and covert tactics for derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium

Merseyside Police confirmed that a mix of highly visible patrols and plain-clothes officers will be deployed throughout the day to manage crowds and respond quickly to any incidents.

Speaking to Merseyside Police, Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton stressed the importance of supporter behaviour.

“It’s always an exciting fixture… but this is particularly special with it being the first Merseyside Derby to be held at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium,” he said.

Adding to that, he said: “A comprehensive and appropriate policing operation has been put in place… We have been planning for months with both clubs, as well as Liverpool City Council and transport partners.”

Chatterton also made it clear that while officers would adopt a “firm, fair and friendly” approach, any criminal behaviour would be dealt with swiftly.

Travel disruption and safety advice issued to supporters

Supporters have been urged to plan their journeys carefully, with road closures and strict parking enforcement in place around the stadium.

“I want to take this opportunity to remind fans to plan your journey and give yourself plenty of time to get to the stadium. Road closures will be in place and strict parking measures will be enforced,” Chatterton warned.

Fans have also been encouraged to remain vigilant throughout the day. “As with any large event, we remind supporters to be vigilant, trust their instincts and report any suspicious or unusual activity,” he added.

Authorities hope the occasion will be remembered for the atmosphere rather than any off-field incidents, with both sets of supporters encouraged to act responsibly.

FGG Says

The first Merseyside Derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium is a landmark moment in Everton’s new era. With that comes added pressure on security and organisation, especially given the intensity of one of football’s fiercest rivalries.

The extensive policing plan shows how seriously authorities are taking the occasion. If supporters respond in the right way, this could set the standard for future derby days at Everton’s new home, which would be loud, passionate, but ultimately safe.
