The transformation of Estadio Benito Villamarin has officially entered a decisive new phase, marking a major milestone in one of La Liga’s most ambitious stadium redevelopment projects.

Home of Real Betis since 1929, the iconic ground is undergoing a complete modernisation aimed at bringing it in line with elite European venues while preserving its historic identity.

After months of preparatory work, the club has now moved into the first formal stage of construction, signalling tangible progress on a project expected to redefine the stadium experience in Seville.

The development is part of a long-term vision to boost matchday revenue, improve facilities and create a venue capable of operating year-round.

Construction officially begins as project moves forward

Real Betis, in partnership with construction firm ACCIONA, has begun the first phase of redevelopment after completing all required administrative procedures.

This initial stage focuses on excavation works and the installation of structural retaining systems to support the creation of new underground levels, forming the foundation for the wider rebuild.

The project had already seen the demolition of the old Preferencia stand, a key step that paved the way for the stadium’s transformation.

Club officials are also continuing to refine the final design and construction timeline through a collaborative process, aiming to optimise both cost and efficiency as work progresses.

Long-term vision includes major upgrades and return timeline

Future phases of the project will see the construction of a brand-new main stand, upgrades to the remaining sections of the stadium, and the addition of modern features including a new roof, facade and commercial spaces.

Plans also include underground parking and a mixed-use development adjacent to the stadium, underlining the club’s ambition to turn the venue into a multi-purpose destination.

During the redevelopment, Real Betis have temporarily relocated to Estadio de La Cartuja, where they are expected to play until the project is completed, with a return targeted around 2027-28.

The revamped stadium is expected to deliver a significant boost to revenue through enhanced hospitality and commercial offerings, while maintaining a capacity of just over 60,000.

FGG Says

This is the moment where plans finally become reality for Real Betis. After years of proposals and delays, the Benito Villamarin is now firmly in its transformation phase.

The challenge now is execution; keeping timelines on track while delivering a stadium that balances tradition with modern demands. If successful, Betis will have a stadium capable of competing with the very best in Spain and across Europe.
