Lincoln City are preparing for their first season back in the second tier of English football in 65 years, and to help ensure they are here to stay, the club are investing in redevelopment work at the LNER Stadium.

The ground, which has been the club's home since 1895, has a capacity of just 10,669, and although that is set to rise ahead of the new season, much of the work will focus on modernisation rather than expansion.

Lincoln City put £10m into stadium improvements

The club have wasted little time since securing promotion at the end of last season, with work at the stadium commencing shortly after being confirmed as champions.

The Imps had a stellar campaign, finishing with 103 points, 12 points ahead of Cardiff City in second and 26 points ahead of Stockport County in third.

There is, therefore, a belief that they can establish themselves as a Championship club in the coming seasons and perhaps even mount a charge for the Premier League. To do that, though, stadium improvements are necessary.

The work being carried out includes an overhaul of the hospitality areas around the stadium, the installation of new giant screens, and improvements to the training area. There will also soon be a new clubhouse, a community coffee shop and pitchside LED lights.

Speaking about the upgrades, the club's chief growth and innovation officer, Jason Futers, said:

“It's an exciting time at the stadium, and certainly it's been a busy summer. We are on track and absolutely will be ready for the coming season.

“As a part of the development, we're absolutely increasing the facilities from a community perspective. That's a key part of the values of the club and it's built into everything we do. That absolutely centres around the current stadium.”

FGG says: A stopgap before a future move?

The obvious comparison to be made here is between the LNER Stadium and Luton's Kenilworth Road, with both being small in stature and arguably inadequate at this level. Luton have made the tough decision to build a new ground, and if Lincoln City do establish themselves in the Championship, then they could quite easily follow suit in the near future.
