Reading have unveiled ambitious plans to transform their home ground with a multi-million-pound investment.
The overhaul is aimed at improving both the matchday experience and the long-term sustainability of the League One outfit.
Reading plan Select Car Leasing Stadium renovation ahead of 2026/27 season
The club’s owner, Rob Couhig, has confirmed a £5 million funding package to modernise the Select Car Leasing Stadium, formally known as the Madejski Stadium.
Key upgrades include the installation of a new pitch to improve playing conditions, alongside the introduction of safe standing areas to enhance the atmosphere inside the ground.
Plans also feature the creation of a fan village designed to boost the overall matchday experience, as well as upgraded floodlights that could be synchronised with music for a more modern entertainment feel.
Elsewhere, new LED advertising boards will be installed to help reduce running costs, while supporter facilities, including bathrooms, are set for refurbishment as part of the wider improvements.

The redevelopment forms part of a broader strategy to increase the stadium’s usage outside of football, with ambitions to host concerts and other large-scale events throughout the year.
With current operating costs sitting at around £2.5 million annually, the club hopes these changes will improve financial sustainability over time.
Importantly, the plans will go ahead regardless of which division Reading are playing in, underlining a long-term commitment to upgrading infrastructure.
FGG says: A much-needed step forward for Reading
This feels like a smart and necessary move for Reading.
While £5 million isn’t on the scale of some modern stadium redevelopments, it targets the areas that matter most – fan experience, atmosphere and long-term revenue generation.
Safe standing and a fan village in particular should make a noticeable difference on matchdays.
It also shows a shift in thinking as modern clubs can’t rely solely on football income anymore, and using the stadium year-round is becoming essential.
For Reading fans, it’s a positive sign, particularly after a difficult period. This kind of investment suggests the club are finally looking forward.
