In January, Leeds United received approval to expand Elland Road to a capacity of 53,000, a significant rise from its current 37,645.

However, one of the club’s investors has pointed out a key feature that he believes should form part of the redevelopment plans.

Pete Lowy has suggested that a tram link between Elland Road and Leeds city centre should be introduced.

With the stadium’s capacity set to increase, it is thought that improved transport links will be necessary to help supporters travel more easily from the city centre, rather than having to make the two-mile walk to the ground.

How far along are the plans to add a tram link?

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds in a wide-ranging interview, Lowy has said work on the expansion of Elland Road has already begun and will continue regardless of the mass transit system plans.

The Australian-born investor added that a transport connection to and from the club's home ground would be crucial to the regeneration of the south Leeds area.

However, West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin has stated that the scheme to do so would be delayed for several years.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority had hoped to have trams running on lines in Leeds and Bradford by early 2030s but it is now believed this will not happen until later in the decade.

The club and politicians are “aligned” according to Lowy but he added that he needs to “push” on the issue.

FGG says: Tram links could be huge

It is hard to disagree with Lowy's view that a tram link would be huge for the city and help fans get to and from the stadium more easily.

With an additional 15,355 fans potentially coming to Elland Road each matchday, it is important to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Although it will be disheartening to hear that the trams may not be introduced for over 10 years, it is good to see plans are in place.
