The atmosphere at Liverpool's Anfield is one of the most iconic in world football, and has often been referenced by players past and present as being amongst the most memorable they have experienced.
The ground's 61,276 capacity crowd – which has expanded under Fenway Sports Group – has even helped to attract new signings, including the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz in recent seasons.
On big-game Champions League nights is when the ground's ‘power' really shines, and it would be fair to say that Liverpool fan songs have influenced more than a few comebacks over the years.
From club anthems such as You'll Never Walk Alone and Allez Allez Allez to player songs for Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, the chants that Reds fans belt out serve as the backbone for the matchday experience at Anfield.
Here, Football Ground Guide provides the lyrics and key context for some of the most famous Liverpool football chants sung by fans.

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic football chants of all time, ‘You'll Never Walk Alone' is amongst the most famous football fan songs in the world.
Originating from the musical ‘Carousel' in 1945, its impact is particularly potent during European nights on Merseyside, when the fans build an electric atmosphere by singing the song to drive the team forward, and its hopeful lyrics have become synonymous with Liverpool's history of famous comebacks.
First sung in the 1960s, the official lyrics for the chant are as follows:
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm,
Is a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of the lark.
Walk on through the wind.
Walk on through the rain.
Though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on walk on with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone…
You'll never walk,
You'll never walk alone…
Red and White Kop
Next on this list of Liverpool football chants is the equally impressive ‘Red and White Kop' song. Also first sung at Anfield during the 1960s, the chant is sung to the tune of The Beatles' hit single ‘Yellow Submarine'.
Although it may not be quite as iconic or world-renowned as ‘You'll Never Walk Alone', it is a terrific song in its own right and one that can still be heard echoing around Anfield to this day.
The full lyrics to the song are as follows:
On a Saturday afternoon,
We support a team called Liverpool,
And we sing until we drop,
In a red and white Spion Kop.
We all live in a red and white Kop,
A red and white Kop,
A red and white Kop,
We all live in a red and white Kop,
A red and white Kop,
A red and white Kop…
In a town where I was born,
Lived a man who sailed the seas,
And he told me of his pride,
They were a famous football team,
So we trailed to Anfield Road,
Singing songs of victory,
And therе we found the holy ground,
Of our hero Bill Shankly,
Wе all live in red and white Kop…
Allez Allez Allez…
This on repeat. ?

This particular chant's melody – inspired by a 1980s Italian disco song – is not unique to Liverpool, but the Reds' fanbase were the first to adapt it into an English football chant.
Known as ‘Allez Allez Allez', the song makes reference to the side's historical European achievements and has been replicated by supporters of other Premier League clubs such as Aston Villa and Arsenal.
A more recent addition to this list (it was not heard at Anfield until 2017-18), the tune has skyrocketed to fame and become one of the most iconic Liverpool football chants out there.
The exact lyrics to the song are as follows:
We conquered all of Europe,
We're never gonna stop,
From Paris down to Turkey,
We've won the f*cking lot.
Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly,
The Fields of Anfield Road,
We are loyal supporters,
And we come from Liverpool.
Allez, allez, allez…
Allez, allez, allez…
Allez, allez, allez…
Allez, allez, allez…

Mohammed Salah has been an even bigger hit at Liverpool than even he himself could have ever dreamt. The 32-year-old has risen to prominence during his time in Merseyside, with his electric pace and ability to consistently score 20+ goals per season helping to fire the Reds to silverware countless times.
In his honour, Liverpool fans have created a belter of a chant that is sung from the stands at almost every game. The lyrics are as follows:
Mo Salah, Mo Salah, Mo Salah,
Running down the wing,
Salah, la, la, la,
The Egyptian King.
It's short, catchy, and one of the best songs in the Premier League right now.
He's Virgil van Dijk
‘He's our center half,he's our number 4,watch him defend, while we watch him score,he'll pass the ball, calm as you like,he's Virgil Van Dijk,he's Virgil Van Dijk'

Another Liverpool player with a cracker of a chant in his name is none other than Virgil van Dijk.
His arrival from Southampton, and the huge price tag that came with it, was initially met with scepticism from even the most optimistic Liverpool fan. But the solidity he has consistently proved the Reds with has been just as important as the goals scored by Salah, and the supporters have acknowledged that.
The lyrics are as follows:
He's our centre-half, he's our number 4,
Watch him defend, and we watch him score,
He'll pass the ball, calm as you like,
He's Virgil Van Dijk…
He's Virgil Van Dijk…
Poor Scouser Tommy
Not many football chants and songs deal with such heavy and serious themes like war and death, but that is the case with Poor Scouser Tommy, one of Liverpool's most underrated songs, in our opinion.
The song tells a tale of a young boy from Liverpool, shipped off to fight in World War II, far away from his home. Soon after, Tommy dies from a Nazi bullet, but before he took his final breath, he uttered his last words – “Oh…I am a Liverpudlian”…
Let me tell you the story of a poor boy
Who was sent far away from his home
To fight for his king and his country
And also the old folks back home
So they put him in a Highland division
Sent him off to a far foreign land
Where the flies swarm around in their thousands
And there's nothing to see but the sand
In a battle that started next morning
Under a Libyan sun
I remember that poor Scouser Tommy
Who was shot by an old Nazi gun
As he lay on the battle field dying
With the blood rushing out of his head (of his head)
As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
These were the last words he said…
Oh…I am a Liverpudlian
I come from the Spion Kop
I like to sing, I like to shout
I get thrown out quite a lot (every week)
We support the team that plays in red
A team that we all know
A team that we call Liverpool
And to glory we will go
We've won the League, we've won the Cup
We've been to Europe too
We played the Toffees for a laugh
And we left them feeling blue – Five Nil !
One two
One two three
One two three four
Five nil !
Rush scored one
Rush scored two
Rush scored three
And Rush scored four!
Poor Scouser Tommy obviously has it's roots from the early post-war years, but the second part of the song was added after Liverpool's 5-0 win over their city rivals Everton in 1982, when Ian Rush scored four goals.
That is our list of the best Liverpool football chants, with honourable mentions going to ‘Roberto Firmino, Si Senor' and ‘He's Alexander-Arnold'. We are also fond of one of the latest chants from the fans about the former Juventus player Federico Chiesa.
