Plans for this month’s Finalissima have been thrown into uncertainty.
With Doha now in serious doubt, attention has turned firmly towards the English capital.
Why could London now host the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina?
London has reportedly become “the leading candidate” to host the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina after growing concerns about staging the match in Qatar.
The fixture had been scheduled for 27 March at Lusail Stadium, but uncertainty in the region has cast serious doubt over Doha’s suitability. As a result, European governing body UEFA and South America’s CONMEBOL are holding final discussions ahead of a Thursday deadline to determine whether the game can proceed, and where.
Madrid was initially proposed but rejected by Argentina, who preferred neutral territory. Morocco also offered to host, though Spain were reportedly reluctant to support that option given ongoing sensitivities surrounding the 2030 World Cup hosting arrangements.
While Wembley Stadium staged the 2022 edition, when Argentina defeated Italy, it is unavailable due to England’s fixture against Uruguay. However, London boasts multiple alternative venues capable of staging a showpiece event at short notice.

FGG says: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Emirates are surely most likely
If London does get the nod, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Emirates Stadium appear the standout options.
Both offer world-class facilities and the neutrality Argentina desires.
Given the logistical challenges elsewhere, the Premier League’s capital looks best placed to rescue one of the international calendar’s most glamorous fixtures.
