River Plate have started major excavation work at the Estadio Monumental as the next phase of the iconic stadium's transformation gets underway.

The ambitious project will eventually take capacity beyond 100,000, with a new fifth tier and complete roof set to transform South America's largest football stadium.

Iconic El Monumental undergoes major renovation

River Plate have announced the beginning of the first major excavation works required to create the foundations for the next stage of the Estadio Monumental redevelopment.

The foundations will support both the stadium's future roof and a new continuous fifth tier, with excavation work reaching between 16 and 27 metres below ground.

Around 17,000 cubic metres of material will be excavated, while the foundations themselves will require 1,684 tonnes of steel and more than 17,000 cubic metres of concrete.

The redevelopment will see a new 360-degree upper tier constructed above the existing bowl, adding around 16,000 seats and taking capacity from 85,018 to approximately 101,000.

A total of 100 columns will support the new structure, including 50 with a distinctive V-shaped design.

The roof will feature a translucent membrane to allow natural light to reach the hybrid playing surface, alongside an acoustic steel structure intended to enhance the atmosphere inside the ground while limiting noise outside it.

Plans also include a panoramic skywalk inspired by Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, new VIP areas, expanded concourses, additional food and drink facilities, more toilets and new giant screens at both ends of the pitch.

The project is expected to cost around £110 million and continue until 2029, with River Plate planning to remain at the Monumental for almost the entire construction period.

FGG says: River Plate expansion will take iconic Monumental to another level

The Monumental is already one of world football's great stadiums, but increasing its capacity beyond 100,000 and adding a complete roof will take the venue to another level entirely.

Keeping River Plate at home for almost the entire construction period is also a major positive for supporters.

If the finished stadium can retain its famous intensity while adding modern facilities and an even greater capacity, Argentina will have a spectacular flagship venue ahead of it hosting one special game at the 2030 World Cup.
