A preferred location for Malaga's new stadium has been identified after a feasibility study was carried out that looked at five potential options.
Estadio La Rosaleda has been Malaga's home since 1941 and is jointly owned by Malaga City Council, the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Provincial Council.
“Nueva Rosaleda” site decided for Malaga
The stadium was originally set to be one of the 11 Spanish venues that would host games at the 2030 World Cup, but it was pulled due to uncertainty over its future.
There have been major discussions over whether Estadio La Rosaleda should be redeveloped or a completely new stadium should be built and it has now been decided that the construction of a “Nueva Rosaleda” is the best course of action.
A study on potential locations for the new build has identified a site near the University of Malaga as the preferred option, with it hoped that the 55,000-seat “Nueva Rosaleda” can be completed by 2032.
“It is worth noting that remodelling La Rosaleda would require its complete demolition, forcing Malaga CF to play at a temporary facility – entailing additional costs and reduced capacity for the duration of the construction work,” the City Council said.

“This is in addition to the detrimental impact such a process would have on the club in both sporting and financial terms, due to limited revenue and the resulting constraints on salary caps.
“Finally, given the site's development potential, this alternative offers the greatest capacity to attract private investment and, consequently, reduce the need for public investment in the project.
“The University location scores highest regarding the potential to host major events, such as concerts and corporate functions, and other revenue-generating activities.”
The current plans would see the existing stadium demolished, with a new development project set for that site which will help finance the new stadium.
FGG says:
With Malaga securing a return to La Liga after eight years away last season, the good news keeps on coming for fans of the White and Sky Blues.
The fact that a location for Malaga's brand-new state-of-the-art stadium has now been settled on is a really key piece of progress and, hopefully, the rest of the process can take place without issue.
