Manchester United continued their rich vein of form under caretaker manager Michael Carrick with a last-gasp victory over Fulham on Sunday, and supporters made their feelings very clear during the game.
With seven minutes remaining, it looked like a routine afternoon for the Red Devils. However, nerves quickly set in when Raul Jimenez converted a penalty, before Kevin appeared to snatch a 91st-minute winner for the Cottagers.
Three minutes later, though, Benjamin Sesko had other ideas as he popped up with the decisive finish to seal all three points in the five-goal thriller, preserving Carrick's 100% record since taking the helm.
It remains to be seen whether he will continue as the permanent man past the current campaign, but if Old Trafford was anything to go by, then it's clear what fans want to happen.
Man Utd fans fully back Michael Carrick with chant
During the second half, chants rang out around the stadium, sending a clear message to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.
On at least three occasions, Old Trafford sang:
“It's Carrick, you know. Hard to not believe it's Scholes!”
Carrick, who knows the club inside out, has overseen impressive victories against rivals Manchester City, league leaders Arsenal, and now Fulham – a run few would have predicted when he was first announced.
Given the quality of the opposition, the dramatic fashion of the results and his history at the club, it's no surprise that optimism is mounting among the United faithful.
The atmosphere around the stadium on Sunday suggests that supporters are already buying into the idea of the former Middlesbrough boss leading the club beyond the current campaign, even despite recent tensions off the pitch with the current board.
FGG says: Is it too soon to back Michael Carrick for permanent Man Utd job?
While the emotion around Carrick's start is understandable, there is still a lot of football to be played before the end of the season.
The Red Devils now find themselves inside the top four and are suddenly eyeing a return to the Champions League – a competition that brings its own unique pressures and challenges. That raises a debate over whether the 44-year-old is the best option in the long run.
With high-profile managers potentially available in the summer – including Thomas Tuchel, whose England deal runs until the 2026 World Cup, and serial winners like Carlo Ancelotti or Luis Enrique – the temptation could be to look elsewhere.
For now, though, Old Trafford has spoken and made their stance very clear. The fans are right behind Carrick and the team.
