Manchester United have begun a major overhaul of the Old Trafford playing surface for the first time in 14 years as preparations ramp up for the 2026/27 campaign.
The work includes a complete relaying of the pitch and a long-awaited safety upgrade designed to better protect players around the edge of the field.
Old Trafford pitch gets major overhaul ahead of 2026/27 season
United's grounds team have stripped the existing surface back to its foundations, replacing the drainage system and preparing an entirely new hybrid pitch made up of 96 per cent natural grass and four per cent artificial fibres.
The extensive renovation is the first of its kind since 2012 and is expected to be the final full rebuild of the Old Trafford pitch before the club eventually moves into its proposed new £2 billion stadium.
Alongside the new surface, United have also addressed concerns surrounding the perimeter wall and brickwork that sit below the famous Old Trafford pitch slope.
The club has installed additional protective padding and extended the grassed area around the pitch edge after concerns that players could suffer injuries when sliding into advertising boards or the surrounding structure.
The issue came under renewed scrutiny last season after Benjamin Sesko aggravated a shin injury following a collision with the perimeter area during United's victory over Liverpool.
Work is currently being overseen by long-serving groundsman Tony Sinclair and his team, with the old pitch materials set to be recycled and reused elsewhere within the industry.

FGG says: A long overdue improvement at Old Trafford
This feels like one of those upgrades that should probably have happened years ago.
The Old Trafford perimeter has caused concern for players, supporters and pundits alike for a long time, so it's encouraging to see Manchester United finally taking action while carrying out wider pitch renovations.
Given the club's plans for a new stadium, this may be the final major investment in the current Old Trafford playing surface, but improving player safety is something that was long overdue.
