Plans to replace one of football’s most historic stadiums have now taken a major step forward after a key milestone was confirmed in Milan this week.

The long-running redevelopment of iconic San Siro is now moving into a crucial planning phase, with a clearer timeline finally emerging.

New San Siro construction works set to begin in 2027

Authorities in Milan have officially launched the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process, which is a key bureaucratic step required before construction can begin, per MilanNews.it.

The project, led by a joint company owned by AC Milan and Inter Milan, will see a brand-new stadium built alongside a partial demolition of the existing San Siro venue.

Work is now expected to begin in the second half of 2027, provided the approval process stays on schedule.

The wider redevelopment plan will be delivered in phases. The first includes construction of the new stadium and relocation of surrounding infrastructure, while the second phase will focus on redeveloping parts of the existing structure alongside new commercial spaces and green areas.

Around 80,000 square metres of green space is also set to be handed over to the city, forming part of a broader regeneration project in the San Siro district.

FGG says: Not long left to see one of football's most iconic stadiums

For all the delays and debates, this update finally gives the project a sense of real momentum.

If these timelines hold true, then the countdown is now firmly on for the current San Siro – a stadium that has hosted decades of iconic moments in European football.

That said, it still remains a complex, multi-phase redevelopment with significant planning hurdles still to clear. Environmental approvals, infrastructure changes and political backing will all need to stay aligned to avoid further setbacks.

There’s also an emotional factor that can’t be ignored. Replacing such an iconic venue was always going to divide opinion, even if modernisation is inevitable, particularly in Italy.

What is clear now, however, is that the process has moved beyond an initial concept and into delivery, and the end of an era is slowly coming into view.
