Despite the 2026 FIFA World Cup still taking place, major talking points and controversy are already surrounding the next edition of football's biggest tournament.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted across six countries and three continents, with Morocco, Portugal and Spain staging the main tournament while Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay each host a centenary opening match.
However, Paraguay's preparations for the special centenary game have been called into question after further concerns emerged over the construction of the new Osvaldo Domínguez-Dibb Stadium.
The Olimpia project was originally expected to be completed in 2027, but repeated delays have now pushed the target date back to 2029, leaving little room for further setbacks ahead of the tournament.
Paraguay's World Cup stadium project facing fresh concerns
FIFA officially confirmed Paraguay as one of the 2030 World Cup host nations in December 2024, with the country set to host one fixture during the tournament.
On the same day, Paraguayan giants Olimpia unveiled plans for the future Osvaldo Domínguez-Dibb Stadium, which was described as the largest and most modern stadium in the country.
The proposed 46,000-capacity venue is set to include 338 executive boxes, extensive VIP areas and improved hospitality facilities, with the redevelopment also providing Olimpia with a long-term home fit for their status as one of Paraguay's biggest clubs.
Demolition of the previous structure began at the end of 2024 and was completed in early 2025, with excavation work initially progressing as planned.

However, the project soon stalled, leading to growing concerns over whether the stadium would be ready in time for the World Cup.
Olimpia later insisted that construction had not stopped and revealed a revised completion date of 2028, before another updated schedule pushed the target back further to June 2029.
The latest delay means the stadium is now expected to be completed just 12 months before Paraguay's scheduled World Cup fixture, increasing pressure on the club and local authorities to ensure the project remains on track.
Despite announcing an agreement with Arena Events+Venues, a company with experience working on previous FIFA World Cups, there have been limited updates surrounding progress at the site.
The lack of communication from Olimpia, the Paraguayan Football Association and CONMEBOL has only increased uncertainty, with questions now being asked over whether the venue will be completed before football's biggest tournament arrives in 2030.
FGG says: Paraguay must avoid a World Cup headache
The Osvaldo Domínguez-Dibb Stadium project was supposed to represent a major step forward for Paraguayan football and become a symbol of national pride ahead of 2030.
However, repeated delays and changing completion dates have turned what should have been an exciting redevelopment into a growing concern.
With the World Cup now just four years away, Paraguay cannot afford further setbacks if it wants to deliver a venue capable of hosting one of football's biggest events.
