Supporters of Newcastle United and Sunderland have been issued travel warnings ahead of the latest Tyne-Wear derby, with authorities urging fans to plan their journeys carefully due to transport disruptions and strict matchday arrangements.

The rivals meet at St James’ Park on Sunday 22 March, and police and local transport operators have coordinated a major safety operation to manage the large number of supporters expected in the city.

Escort plans and travel disruption explained ahead of Tyne-Wear derby

Officials have advised visiting Sunderland supporters to arrive at Newcastle Central Station before 10:15am, where a police-escorted walk to the stadium will depart shortly afterwards.

Authorities say most away supporters are expected to travel together as part of the escorted group to avoid congestion and safety issues. Fans arriving later may need to wait for another police escort and could risk missing the 12pm kick-off if delays occur.

Public transport services are also affected on derby day. A Sunday timetable will be in operation on the Tyne and Wear Metro network, while engineering works mean trains between Durham, Darlington and Newcastle will not run as normal, with replacement buses introduced instead.

Road closures and heavy police presence

Supporters travelling by car have also been warned about road closures around Newcastle city centre, including routes near the station and stadium such as Barrack Road and St James’ Boulevard.

A significant police presence will be deployed across both Newcastle and Sunderland to manage the event and ensure the derby passes without incident.

Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Mark Hall said authorities want fans to “play their part” in ensuring the match runs safely and smoothly.

The fixture between Newcastle and Sunderland remains one of the most intense rivalries in English football, known as the Tyne-Wear derby, a clash that has long divided the neighbouring North East cities.

With the match returning to the Premier League calendar this season after several years apart, anticipation among supporters is once again high, making careful planning around travel and security arrangements essential.

FGG Says

Derbies like Newcastle vs Sunderland are about far more than football, which is why authorities take extensive measures to manage travel and crowd safety.

The Tyne-Wear derby has a long history of passionate support and intense atmosphere, and with thousands expected to descend on Newcastle, transport disruptions and police escorts are designed to prevent chaos around the stadium and city centre.
