Nottingham Forest chairman Nicholas Randall has revealed that he is confident the long-awaited City Ground expansion will soon be able to move forward.
Randall recently admitted there is now “light at the end of the tunnel” regarding the club’s plans to increase the stadium’s capacity to more than 50,000.
Submitted proposals would lead to a complete overhaul of the ground
Back in 2019, plans were first unveiled to expand Forest’s iconic home, although the original proposal only aimed to increase the capacity from 30,445 to around 35,000.
However, lengthy discussions with Nottingham City Council, combined with delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually placed the development plans on hold.
The latest proposals, which were submitted during the New Year period, outline far more ambitious redevelopment plans that would dramatically transform the stadium, including the demolition of the Peter Taylor Stand and an overall capacity increase to more than 52,000.

The club’s rise on the pitch in recent years has also strengthened the case for redevelopment.
Forest returned to the Premier League in 2022 and enjoyed an impressive Europa League campaign this season, eventually falling to the eventual champions and Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the semi-finals.
Randall has now suggested the club are edging closer to finally receiving approval to move ahead with the redevelopment project.
He said: “In order to sustain what we have built so far, we need a world-class stadium. We need significant capacity.
“This development gives us the potential to be a properly established Premier League team, regularly competing for European places and to have a very strong women’s team.”
FGG Says: Expansion will continue club's growth
As previously mentioned, Nottingham Forest have continued to progress in recent years and their run to the Europa League semi-finals highlighted how far the club has come since returning to the Premier League.
They also enter the final day of the Premier League with one defeat in eight and have managed to stay clear of a late season relegation fight under new manager Vítor Pereira.
If Forest continue to establish themselves in the Premier League and compete regularly in Europe, expanding the City Ground appears to be the natural next step and could help secure the club’s long-term future at the highest level.
