Fans visiting Old Trafford should be aware of the stadium’s strict matchday security procedures, including tight restrictions on bags and certain personal items.

The home of Manchester United has introduced a small-bag policy designed to improve safety and reduce congestion at turnstiles. All supporters entering the stadium are subject to security checks before gaining access.

What bags are allowed at Old Trafford?

Old Trafford only permits very small bags inside the stadium.

The maximum permitted size is: 20cm × 15cm × 5cm (8 inches × 6 inches × 2 inches)

This is roughly equivalent to a small handbag or clutch-style bag. Standard backpacks, rucksacks and larger handbags are not allowed.

Exceptions can be made for bags containing essential medical supplies or baby-changing items, but these should only be brought if necessary.

Because of these restrictions, supporters are encouraged to arrive at the stadium without bags whenever possible to speed up the entry process.

Does Old Trafford have a bag drop facility?

Yes. Supporters who arrive with larger bags can use the official bag storage facility outside the stadium.

The bag drop is located at the E2 car park near the visitors’ section.

Key details include:

  • Cost: £5 per bag
  • Payment: Card payment only
  • Collection: After the match

Any bag exceeding the size limit must be left at this facility before entering the stadium.

Security checks at Old Trafford

Security procedures are in place for every match at Old Trafford.

Supporters will be subject to physical and/or visual bag searches before entering the stadium footprint. These checks are conducted in partnership with organisations such as Greater Manchester Police to ensure the safety of fans, staff and players.

To help move queues quickly, supporters should:

  • Keep bags to a minimum size
  • Remove items from pockets when approaching security
  • Follow instructions from stewards and stadium staff

What items are allowed inside Old Trafford?

While the bag rules are strict, some everyday items are permitted.

These include:

  • Mobile phones
  • Small fold-up umbrellas
  • Small bottles of hand gel
  • Clear plastic water bottles up to 500ml (with the cap removed)
  • Small flags or banners up to 2m × 1m, provided they have no poles or sticks
  • Purchases made at the club shop in official carrier bags
  • Walking aids or crutches for accessibility needs

Supporters requiring medical equipment are advised to contact the club in advance to ensure a smooth entry process.

What items are prohibited at Old Trafford?

A wide range of items are banned to maintain safety inside the stadium.

Examples include:

  • Fireworks, flares or smoke devices
  • Air horns or gas canisters
  • Weapons such as knives
  • Alcohol brought from outside
  • Glass bottles, cans or drinking glasses
  • Large bags or suitcases
  • Laptops, tablets or large cameras
  • Selfie sticks, poles or tools

Flags or banners larger than 2m × 1m or displaying offensive messaging are also prohibited.

In line with guidance from the Premier League, certain politically sensitive flags or symbols may also be restricted depending on the situation.

Can fans re-enter Old Trafford after leaving?

No. Re-entry is not permitted once supporters leave Old Trafford.

If you exit the stadium during a match or event, you will not be able to return using the same ticket.

This policy applies to all major fixtures and helps maintain strict crowd control and security procedures.
