Real Madrid's upcoming presidential election has taken an interesting turn after challenger Enrique Riquelme unveiled an ambitious vision for the club's stadium infrastructure and member facilities.

With long-time president Florentino Perez facing electoral opposition for the first time in two decades, stadium development has quickly become one of the key talking points of the campaign.

Enrique Riquelme promises to upgrade Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium

Enrique Riquelme has pledged to significantly expand the capacity of the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano if he is elected president of Real Madrid.

The current venue, which hosts matches for Real Madrid Castilla and Real Madrid Femenino, holds just under 6,000 spectators. Riquelme's proposal would increase that figure to 20,000 seats as part of a wider redevelopment programme.

The expansion forms part of what he has labelled the “Member City” project, a large-scale plan focused on improving facilities for club members while also investing in women's football and youth development.

Among the proposals are a new 15,000-seat basketball arena, a members-only social club, hotel accommodation and expanded facilities for the women's team.

Riquelme has also suggested that Real Madrid Femenino should play matches at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time.

Elsewhere, the project includes plans for a large fan plaza capable of hosting 25,000 supporters, additional football pitches, tennis and padel courts, an aquatic centre and an auditorium.

The candidate has also promised to reduce membership fees by 50 per cent and introduce a lottery system for 10,000 season tickets in an effort to address lengthy waiting lists.

The election takes place on June 7, with Riquelme attempting to unseat incumbent president Perez, who has overseen the club throughout much of its modern era.

FGG says: Ambitious but a huge challenge awaits at Real Madrid

On paper, many of these proposals are likely to appeal to Real Madrid supporters.

Expanding the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, improving facilities for the women's team and creating more opportunities for members are all ideas that feel aligned with the club's long-term growth.

The issue for Riquelme is not necessarily the quality of the plans – it is who he's running against.

Perez remains one of the most influential figures in world football and has just delivered the spectacular Bernabeu redevelopment, which transformed one of the sport's most iconic venues.

Overturning that level of support will be incredibly difficult. The proposals themselves may resonate with many fans, but whether they are enough to change the result of the election is another question entirely.
