River Plate remove ‘giant’ feature from Estadio Monumental as 101,000-capacity renovation continues

River Plate have removed one of the most recognisable features of the Estadio Monumental as work on the club’s huge stadium redevelopment gathers pace.

The giant screen above the Sivori stand has been dismantled to make way for the structure supporting a new fifth tier and roof.

Recent footage shows the removal of the Monumental’s giant screen, which sits above the Sivori stand.

The dismantling is a necessary part of River Plate’s ambitious expansion and roofing project, with the existing structure needing to be cleared before construction of the new fifth tier and roof can progress.

The screen will eventually be replaced by two new integrated displays, each measuring 25 metres long and eight metres high.

They will be supported by the new roof structure, while the existing 360-degree screen around the middle tiers will remain operational during the works.

The next stage will involve removing the piles that previously supported the old screen, as construction continues on a project designed to increase the Monumental's capacity to 101,000 spectators and add a full roof.

River Plate currently list the stadium's capacity at more than 85,000, with the redevelopment targeted for 2029.

The club's wider plans include a fifth tier providing 16,000 additional places, alongside a new roof supported by 100 V-shaped steel columns.

There is something slightly strange about seeing such a familiar feature disappear, but this is exactly the sort of change that comes with a redevelopment of this scale.

The old screen has served its purpose, and removing it allows River to move towards a much bigger and more modern Monumental.

Taking the stadium beyond 100,000 capacity while adding a roof is an enormous undertaking, and these early stages are beginning to show how dramatically the ground will eventually change.
