Goalkeeper vows to buy 600 pints for Rotherham United fans

Ahead of the club's final game of the season against Cardiff City on Saturday, May 4, Rotherham United's Viktor Johansson has vowed to provide 600 pints for supporters in a local pub in the hours before kick-off.

It is an incredibly generous offer from the 25-year-old shot-stopper that has been met with huge praise from fans on social media.

A promise of 600 pints

Johansson announced his plans via an official Rotherham United Facebook page named ‘Rotherham United The Millers', which released a message on his behalf saying: “At 9am this Saturday the Cutlers Arms will open early at his request with a special treat for Millers fans.

“The first 600 pints (1 per person) are being paid for by Viktor as a thank you (not goodbye) for your support.”

The statement also revealed that each drink will be accompanied by a note containing a special message from the keeper.

‘Very generous': fans react to Viktor Johansson Vow

Free pints are always a welcomed surprise in the footballing world, and unsurprisingly, the announcement has been received very well on social media.

One fan took to X, formerly Twitter, to praise the hail the keeper, stating that “That'll cost upwards of around £3,000. Plus the card with the message. Very generous of him. An excellent player-fan relationship there.”

While another highlighted just how good a player the shot-stopper is, saying: “Absolutely class keeper and person he is going to be missed by far the best keeper we have ever had I’ll miss him more than any other player and I’ve been a miller for 38years.”

Hats off to Johansson, it is quite possibly one of the best ways to depart a club.

A sad goodbye

The 2023/24 campaign was the Swedish keeper's last at the Millers, and unfortunately, it did not go as planned. After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Championship last season, the club failed to achieve the same feat this time around.

Rotherham have occupied the bottom of the league for much of the campaign, winning just four games and accumulating a disastrous 24 points heading into their last match this weekend.

With Viktor Johansson set to depart Rotherham in the summer, it would have been easy for him to shy away from the public eye amid what has been a terrible season. But, he was determined to maintain his incredible relationship with the fans, and his vow of 600 free pints has certainly done just that.
