One of European football’s most iconic stadiums has undergone a stunning transformation.
And it’s something few would have imagined even a few years ago.
Bernabeu transforms into tennis courts for Madrid Open
The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium has been converted into a tennis venue as part of the Madrid Open, showcasing the full potential of its recent redevelopment.
Thanks to the stadium’s retractable pitch system, the playing surface has been removed to make way for a clay court inside the arena, creating a completely different look to the usual football setting.
Stars from both sports came together for a special session, with Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois joining tennis icons Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner on court.
Nadal described the experience as “spectacular”, highlighting just how unique it is to see tennis played inside one of football’s most famous stadiums.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort to use the Bernabeu as a multi-purpose venue following its major renovation, with the Madrid Open using the space as an additional training and showcase facility.
FGG says: This is exactly what modern stadiums are built for
This is the clearest example yet of where stadium design is heading.
The Bernabeu isn’t just a football ground anymore. It has become an all-purpose entertainment venue, and this kind of transformation is exactly what its redevelopment was designed to allow.
Purists might raise an eyebrow at tennis inside a football stadium, but from a commercial and innovation standpoint, it’s hard to argue against.
