Tottenham Hotspur announced a partnership with Netflix on 17 December in preparation for the launch of the second season of Squid Game on Boxing Day. It comes at a time when the club’s supporters have planned protests against Daniel Levy’s ENIC ownership, which has seen the club go trophyless since 2008.
Details of Tottenham’s squid game announcement
On 17 December, Tottenham announced the partnership with Netflix ahead of the second season of the streaming platform’s most-watched series ever, Squid Game.
Before matches against Liverpool on 22 December and Wolverhampton Wanderers on 29 December at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there will be Squid Game guards in pink jumpsuits and a blimp of the infamous doll that featured in the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ episode. As well as this, there will be trailers for Season 2 displayed inside the stadium on LED screens.
Before its release on 26 December, players for the men’s and women’s teams will take part in Squid Game-specific challenges across the club’s social media channels.
Ryan Norys, Chief Revenue Officer, Tottenham Hotspur, said: “Squid Game 2 will undoubtedly be one of the most talked-about shows over the festive period and our partnership with Netflix places the Club at the centre of popular culture. This is yet another exciting way to enhance the matchday experience and bring our fans fresh, engaging content across digital channels”.
Why are the Spurs fans angry at the promotional stunt?
There is general disquiet at Levy from Spurs supporters as they club sit 10th in the Premier League table after 16 matches. The club have gone trophyless since 2008, losing four finals in that time.
The timing of the Netflix partnership has been criticised by Tottenham fans, especially as there is a planned protest against Chairman Levy before the game against Liverpool on Sunday. There is a feeling that the club have prioritised increased revenue off the pitch in recent years ahead of on-field success.
On X, @ChangeForSpurs has released details about the “peaceful protest” against ENIC on Sunday, 22 December.
