Sunderland announce new Stadium of Light feature for 2026-27 season after Europa League qualification

Sunderland have announced a significant upgrade to the Stadium of Light ahead of the 2026-27 season, with rail seating set to be installed in selected areas of the ground as the club prepares for a campaign that will include European football.

The Black Cats secured qualification for the Europa League after an outstanding season, ensuring that some of Europe's biggest clubs will visit Wearside next term. 

With demand for tickets expected to rise and the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light set to reach new levels, Sunderland have confirmed plans to introduce dedicated rail seating sections this summer.

The move forms part of the club's wider commitment to supporter safety and improving the overall matchday experience.

Where will Sunderland install rail seating?

According to the club, rail seating will be introduced in parts of the Roker End and the South West Corner before the start of the new season.

The installation will specifically cover blocks U15, U16, U17, U18, U37, U38, U39 and U40, areas traditionally associated with some of the Stadium of Light's most vocal supporters.

Sunderland have stressed that the project is designed to ensure safe standing areas are managed responsibly and in line with current regulations and guidance. The club also confirmed that supporters using wheelchair spaces on the lateral gangway will not be affected by the changes.

Rail seating has become increasingly common across English football in recent years following the introduction of licensed safe standing areas. The system allows supporters to stand safely behind an integrated rail while also retaining the ability to convert sections back into seated areas when required.

The Stadium of Light joins a growing list of major venues that have embraced the concept as clubs look to balance atmosphere, safety and supporter preference.

Why are Sunderland making the change now?

The timing of the announcement is unlikely to be a coincidence. Sunderland are preparing for one of the biggest seasons in their recent history after securing a return to European competition.

The Stadium of Light, which remains one of the largest football venues in England with a capacity of almost 49,000, has regularly generated some of the loudest atmospheres in the country. 

The introduction of rail seating is expected to further enhance that environment, particularly in supporter-led sections of the ground.

Demand for season tickets and European match tickets is expected to be exceptionally high, with fans eager to experience continental nights on Wearside once again.

The project also reflects a wider trend across English football, where clubs have increasingly recognised that many supporters prefer standing throughout matches regardless of whether traditional seating is provided.
