Sunderland supporters could not resist aiming a fresh jab at Newcastle United after their impressive comeback victory over Everton on Sunday, with a new chant quickly making the rounds among travelling fans.
The Black Cats produced a memorable second-half turnaround at Hill Dickinson Stadium and left Merseyside with three points, but many supporters were still thinking about their biggest rivals by full-time.
Sunderland fans debut new chant during win at Everton
Sunderland staged an impressive fightback to beat Everton 3-1, and strengthened their hopes of securing European football next season.
After falling behind to Merlin Rohl's first-half effort, Regis Le Bris' side responded in style after the break through Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fee and Wilson Isidor.
But alongside the result itself, many supporters leaving the Merseyside venue were singing a new chant aimed squarely at Newcastle.
The lyrics referenced Sunderland’s difficult recent years before celebrating their return to the Premier League and victories over their North East rivals this season:
“You laughed at us,
When we were s***e,
We came back up,
And beat you twice.
One-nil at home,
Two-one away,
All the Geordies ran away.”
The chant appeared to spread quickly among supporters on the concourses and outside the stadium after the final whistle, adding another chapter to one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.
With the Black Cats back in the top flight and the Magpies firmly re-established among the Premier League elite, the Tyne-Wear derby has once again regained the intensity that many supporters had missed during Sunderland’s years away.
FGG says: This chant looks like an instant hit among Sunderland fans
Football chants that stick are usually simple, catchy and built around recent memories supporters love revisiting, and this one ticks every box.
Rival fans will always accuse each other of obsession, but that back‑and‑forth is exactly what fuels derby culture. Sunderland supporters have endured some difficult years, and now they finally have recent bragging rights they’re more than happy to sing about.
Judging by the reaction in the stands and the concourses after the Everton game, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this chant quickly becomes a regular soundtrack at the Stadium of Light.
