Sunderland have added a nostalgic touch to the Stadium of Light, and it is already striking a chord with supporters ahead of their next home game.

Sunderland release first images of Roker End changes ahead of Forest clash

The Black Cats have revealed a new “Welcome to Sunderland” sign on the exterior of the Roker End at the Stadium of Light.

The update is a direct tribute to the club’s former home, Roker Park, where a similar sign became an iconic feature for generations of fans.

The new installation has been put in place ahead of Sunderland’s clash with Nottingham Forest, with the club sharing first images of the upgrade on social media.

While relatively small in scale, the change is symbolic — reconnecting the modern Stadium of Light with Sunderland’s historic roots.

The Roker End itself is already one of the most atmospheric parts of the ground, and this addition strengthens that identity even further.

FGG says: A simple touch that will mean a lot to Sunderland fans

Not every stadium upgrade needs to be a major redevelopment.

Sometimes it is the smaller, thoughtful additions that resonate most with fans, and this is a perfect example of that.

By bringing back a nod to Roker Park, Sunderland are tapping into the club’s history and identity, which is something supporters always value.

It may not change the matchday experience in a dramatic way, but it reinforces a sense of belonging and tradition.

And in modern football, where many grounds risk feeling increasingly generic, touches like this can make all the difference.
