Sunderland have opened a permanent memorial garden near the Stadium of Light, giving supporters a dedicated place to remember loved ones who have passed away.
The new space builds on an existing memorial area and recognises the lifelong connection that generations of Black Cats supporters have with the club.
Sunderland open new garden to commemorate loved ones
Sunderland officially opened the new walled garden near the Stadium of Light's Jimmy Montgomery Stand on Saturday alongside supporters' group Heaven Branch.
A version of the memorial garden has existed in the stadium car park since 2022, but the area has now been expanded with a new lawn and additional walling to create a permanent space for remembrance.
Heaven Branch founder Joanne Youngson revealed to the BBC that the lawn contains earth removed from inside the Stadium of Light, adding another meaningful connection between the memorial and the club.
Supporters will be able to spread the ashes of loved ones on the lawn, while commemorative pebbles can also be placed around the garden.
Heaven Branch runs sessions approximately every four months where supporters can paint personalised pebbles in memory of family members and friends.
A memorial bench has also been installed in honour of former Sunderland Supporters' Association chairman George Forster, who was previously described as the club's “supporter of the century”.
“George is there now forever to look over his beloved club,” Youngson said.
She explained that the project reflects how deeply Sunderland is connected to generations of families across the North East.
“I think especially up in the North East, particularly Sunderland, the team means so much over generations,” she added. “Just because we die, it doesn't mean we're no longer a supporter.”
FGG says: A fitting way to remember lifelong Sunderland supporters
This is a heartwarming initiative from Sunderland and something we would love to see replicated at more grounds across English football.
For many supporters, following their club is a lifelong commitment. They give countless weekends and years of their free time to standing or sitting in the same stadium.
Providing somewhere beside that stadium where they can eventually be remembered feels entirely fitting.
