West Ham United are facing increasing scrutiny amid concerns their position could impact the UK’s hopes of hosting a major global event.
Fresh doubts have emerged over whether London Stadium will be available at a crucial time in the proposed calendar.
West Ham unwilling to vacate London Stadium at start of 2029/30 season
At the centre of the issue is the UK’s bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2029, with organisers requiring exclusive use of the London Stadium for around three weeks to prepare and host the competition.
However, the Hammers have so far not agreed to vacate the venue at the start of the 2029/30 season, citing a contractual clause that prioritises their fixtures during the football calendar.
That stance has raised concerns that the bid could be undermined, particularly with rival cities such as Rome, Munich and Nairobi also in contention.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe has stressed the scale of the event, widely regarded as one of the biggest global sporting competitions outside the Olympics and World Cup, while urging flexibility from host cities.
“All I would say is that I would hope that there is recognition that outside the Olympic Games and the World Cup, this is the third-largest sporting gathering. I do ask cities to try to accommodate us. There has to be a recognition that it’s a big global sport. This is not a gimme to anyone,” he added.
The scheduling clash stems from World Athletics’ preference for a September slot, ensuring the championships act as the finale to the season, which is something they are reluctant to compromise on.
FGG says: A difficult clash of priorities that may require compromise
West Ham are well within their contractual rights to prioritise their football fixtures, particularly given the disruption a three-week relocation would cause at the start of a season.
At the same time, hosting a global event of this magnitude would be a major boost for London and the UK, both economically and reputationally.
The reality is that neither side holds a perfect solution.
Unless flexibility is shown, whether through scheduling adjustments or a temporary agreement, there is a genuine risk that the opportunity could slip away altogether.
