Authorities have now responded after incidents involving both sets of fans circulated widely on social media.
Northumbria Police statement after Newcastle and Sunderland fans clash outside St James’ Park
Northumbria Police confirmed they had increased their presence across the region for the Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland at St James' Park.
Despite videos showing supporters from both sides goading each other before kick-off, police stated the overall operation “passed largely without incident”.
Three arrests were made during the day, while officers also responded to a medical emergency on Gallowgate, with the individual reported to be in a stable condition.
During the match, a separate report of discriminatory abuse was also flagged, with police reiterating their zero-tolerance stance and confirming appropriate action would be taken.
Officials thanked the majority of fans for adhering to safety measures, as well as both clubs and local partners for their cooperation in ensuring the fixture went ahead as smoothly as possible.

FGG says: Tyne-Wear derby disorder disappointing given scale of planning
Given the level of preparation that goes into a fixture like this, it is disappointing that clashes between supporters were still able to occur.
The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the most intense rivalries in English football, but incidents like this risk overshadowing the occasion.
While the majority of fans behaved responsibly, even isolated flashpoints highlight how quickly situations can escalate.
The focus must now be on ensuring lessons are learned, so future meetings between these two clubs are remembered for the football rather than ugly scenes off the pitch.
